Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from sun damage, premature aging, and skin cancer. But understanding what SPF actually means can help you choose the best sunscreen for your skin.
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays, which cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer risk. For example, SPF 30 sunscreen means it would take 30 times longer for skin to burn than without protection.
Important: SPF does not measure protection from UVA rays, which penetrate deeper into the skin, accelerate aging, and increase the risk of melanoma. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen to ensure protection from both UVA and UVB rays.
Not sure which sunscreen is right for you? Consult a board-certified dermatologist to find the best sun protection for your skin type.
